Because sleep itself is such a vulnerable thing. To sleep well, your body has to feel safe enough to let go for a while. Animals remind us of that instinctive softness. When you see a dog fully passed out with its legs twitching during a dream, or a tiny fox curled beneath its tail for warmth, it taps into something ancient and comforting. And then there are the truly relatable sleepers: the exhausted orange cat asleep face-first in a chair. The ferret completely melted into a blanket like a dropped noodle. The raccoon passed out in the strangest position imaginable after what was presumably a long day of tiny criminal activity.

Animals approach naps with a level of commitment humans can only dream of. Cats curl themselves into impossibly perfect little circles, tucking their paws beneath their bodies like they’re folding themselves into softness. Puppies sprawl across couches in positions that look deeply uncomfortable yet somehow result in the most peaceful sleep imaginable. Baby bunnies sink into fluffy piles together like living clouds, while sleepy ducks rest with their tiny heads tucked beneath their wings, completely trusting the quiet around them. It’s impossible to scroll through sleepy animal memes without feeling your own energy soften a little.
